Gran Café 1919 is a coffee shop in Mallorca, located in one of the most frequented and well located places of Port of Pollensa. With the opening of this café, Grupo Boulevard wished to recover the initial spirit of the creation of coffee shops, which were a place of gathering where clients could exchange opinions.
THE HISTORY OF CAFÉS IN SPAIN
It all started in Madrid with Café Pombo, where people used to meet up to chat about bull fighting and literature, where everything spun around coffee and cigars. We also find Els Quatre Gats, where modernist artists such as Santiago Rusinol or Ramon Casas used to meet with a more cultural and artistic approach and where poem recitals or Chinese shadow shows used to take place.
LOTS OF COFFEE SHOPS HAVEN’T JUST BEEN WITNESS TO CHATTING BUT ALSO HAVE WITNESSED HISTORICAL EVENTS
An example of this is La tranquilidad in Barcelona, where even though its name gives a feeling of peace and happiness, it was nothing like that inside. It’s a coffee shop located on the Paral.lel of Barcelona where hit men and anarchists used to meet up and “Star” pistols were raffled every week.
The most historical act taken place there, amongst many, was in 1936 when military soldiers were walking down that very transited street and a group of CNT workers came out of La tranquilidad and stopped the fascist group in their tracks, this being the first civil act against the regime.
This way, the idea of bars and café’s being reunion places has lasted, and even though this concept was originally born only for the high class of society, it has now become a place for everyone, and today there are many varieties of café’s, from legendary to modern ones and including many options available for all pockets.
In our case, Grand Café 1919 is inspired by legendary café’s of the start of the 20th century, where grandeur and the beauty of small details is carefully maintained, and where we always try to better our service, which is what was most looked after in those days. All of our workers are dressed in traditional modernist uniforms, our products are created and served with uppermost detailed attention and we make sure each and every one of our clients is served perfectly.
